Boone bolsters voting machine privacy

Burlington, KY–The Boone County Fiscal Court has voted to purchase 121 privacy booths for the new optical scan E–scan voting machines. The Boone County Board of Elections requested the purchase in response to privacy concerns from voters in the May 18 primary election, which was the first time the new voting machines were used.

Burlington, KY–Eve Vaske says she was born and raised on a farm so in Boone County that’s been all of her life. Vaske, owner of Vaske Produce in Walton, said the farm has fresh eggs, produce, tobacco, cattle, hogs, hay, straw and firewood. The farm was purchased in 1972.

Boone Hires Help For Homeless Study

Burlington, KY–Boone County has hired a consultant who will work on a study of homelessness. Kirk Kavanaugh, director of the county's human services department, said it received a $3,000 grant from Welcome House of Northern Kentucky to conduct an economic study to determine the cost of homelessness in the three Northern Kentucky counties in 2008–09 involving 37 chronically homeless individuals.

S. Airfield Road Project Moving Forward

Burlington, KY– It was a good week for the South Airfield Road project. On Tuesday Boone County Fiscal Court members agreed to designate funds to secure the last parcel of land needed for the project. On Thursday the Ohio Kentucky Indiana Regional Council of Governments allocated $3 million for the project, which will allow a Houston Road connector to be included in the project.

Boone Won’t Raise Property Taxes

Burlington, KY– The Boone County Fiscal Court has voted to accept a projected budget shortfall rather than raise its property tax rates. The vote keeps the county tax rate on real property at 10.2 cents per $100 of assessed value and motor vehicles at 15.6 percent, while personal property rates were lowered to 14.6 cents per $100 of assessed value.

Emergency Director Leaves After 20 Years

Burlington, KY– One particular emergency in Boone County Dan Maher remembers involves Florence Mall being turned into a truck stop and housing a Rottweiler at a Boone County High School locker room. That was all during a winter storm in 1994. Maher took those memories and others with him as he retired after 20 years with Boone County’s emergency management department on June 30.

Boone Detective Succeeds in High-Profile Cases

Burlington, KY– Tracy Watson has encountered a lot of bad people in her career and helped put many of them behind bars. Boone Transfers Water Program

Burlington, KY– The Boone County Fiscal Court on June 22 voted 3–0 to approve transferring its rural water program to the Boone County Water District but residents should not notice any changes. Judge–executive Gary Moore said the program is one the county began years ago. The Fiscal Court had entered into creating a rural water program so the county could more aggressively extend water to the outlying areas.

Boone Shelter Unveiling Adoption Van

Burlington, KY– The Boone County Animal Shelter will formally unveil its Mobile Adoption Van at the PetFest in Burlington Sunday. The van, which cost $124,755, was purchased with money generated through private fundraising efforts. The Boone County Fiscal Court formally approved the purchase of the adoption unit at its June 8 meeting.

Ribbon Cut on Hebron Road Project

Hebron, KY– Gov. Steve Beshear was in Boone County again Thursday, his third visit to the Northern Kentucky county in less than a month. Beshear was in Hebron for a ceremony signaling the completion of a $31 million road project along the North Bend Road retail corridor. He then headed to Gateway Community and Technical College in Florence to tour the new Advanced Manufacturing Building on its campus and tout more than 400 new manufacturing jobs that are coming to the county.

Boone Projects Surplus

BOONE COUNTY, KY–Boone County government should end fiscal year 2010 on June 30 with an expected surplus of $5.75 million to $6 million, according to a report by county officials. That would be an increase from $4.77 million on June 30, 2009. County Administrator Jeff Earlywine and County Treasurer Lisa Buerkley said in their third-quarter report that total lineitem spending across all departments in the general fund is projected to be below original budget appropriations by $1.25 million to $1.5 million at the end of fiscal year 2010.

Dog License Expiration Extended to January 31st

BOONE COUNTY, KY–Since the inception of the Kentucky Dog Laws in the mid-1950s, dog owners in Boone County have renewed their dog’s license tag on or before June 30th of each year. That will change this year in Boone County. The expiration date of all current Boone County dog licenses is being extended to January 31st in an effort to balance the shelter’s workload.

BOONE COUNTY, KY–According to the latest update from the Boone County Planning Commission, 72% of residents across the county have responded to the Census form received at their home earlier this month. In 2000, the final response rate for the county was 74%. Judge/Executive Gary Moore encourages residents to fill out the 10 question form. Boone Continues Fast Growth

Boone County’s population grew 2.2 percent from 2008 to 2009 despite troubles with the economy, including at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, according to freshly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Boone County grew by 2,577 people from July 1, 2008, to July 1, 2009, according to the federal agency. Boone’s population stepped up from 115,999 to 118,576, according to figures the bureau released this week.

Boone County Buying Forest Land

Boone County has agreed to buy 181.4 acres of forested land in western Boone County from a nonprofit group. The Boone County Fiscal Court on March 2 approved using a state grant to purchase two parcels called Dinsmore Woods and Boone Cliffs.

Boone County Leaving Cable Board

Boone County plans to be operating its own cable television franchise starting in the summer of 2011. The Boone County Fiscal Court on March 2 unanimously approved an ordinance that tells the Telecommunications Board of Northern Kentucky that it plans to leave the organization effective June 30, 2011.

Boone Plans To Save On Debt

Burlington, KY–Boone County expects to save about $83,000 by refinancing some of its debt. The Boone County Fiscal Court on Feb. 16 unanimously approved refinancing bonds that paid for golf course improvements and a new firehouse for the Walton Fire Protection District. The county owns Boone Links and Lassing Pointe golf courses.

Boone Salt Supplies In Good Shape

Burlington, KY–Local governments in Boone County say they have enough salt to treat icy roads for the rest of the winter even though the area has been hammered with record snowfall this month. Boone County Engineer Greg Sketch said the county has used about 5,000 to 5,500 tons of salt, costing about $325,000. He said the county has plenty of it.

Fiscal Court Passes Ordinance Enabling Bond Refinance

Burlington, KY–The Boone County Fiscal Court voted to authorize the issuance of general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $3.5 million for the purpose of refinancing debt and funding the energy savings project. Boone County and Schwan’s Expand Frozen Meals for Seniors Program

Burlington, KY–In an effort to feed more homebound seniors, Boone County expanded the frozen meal program originally started in 2008.  At the February 2, 2010 Fiscal Court meeting, the court voted unanimously to expand this frozen meal program to serve 20 additional seniors.  “Seniors who were previously on a waiting list will now receive meals,” stated Judge/Executive Gary Moore.  Nearly 100 homebound seniors can be served by this partnership with the Schwan Food Company.

Census Could Affect Boone Legislative Districts

Burlington, KY–In 2000, Boone County had the highest census response rate in Northern Kentucky, and with much at stake, plans are under way to ensure strong participation again this year. Boone Sewage Tunnel Ahead of Schedule

Burlington, KY–Deep below the snow–covered fields near Botts Lane, a 65–ton Celtic Tiger is clawing a 12–foot–wide path through the shale and limestone, 16 hours a day, five days a week. This is not your average groundhog burrowing a tunnel: The boring machine nicknamed the Celtic Tiger is 193 feet long, working more than 130 feet below the surface, and is on a gradual six–mile eastward journey that will take it to near Camp Ernst Lake County Park by this time next year.

2010 Census: Here Are The Questions

From NKY.com–The U.S. Census Bureau touts a new, 10–question form that officials say should take the average household 10 minutes to complete. But the 10 questions are just for the first person, with seven more questions for each additional person. Up to 12 people can be included on one form. The instructions require respondents to count all people, including babies, who live and sleep in the household most of the time.

Jobless Rate Steady in 2 of 3 NKY Counties

BURLINGTON, KY–Unemployment dropped in Boone County in November, while it stayed steady in Campbell and Kenton counties, according to new data Wednesday from the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. The jobless rate in Boone County was 9.4 percent, down from 9.6 percent in October but up from 5.9 percent in November 2008.

Boone County Prepared For Snow

BURLINGTON, KY–The Boone County Public works Department says, "let it snow."

Well, not really, but county officials say that when the white stuff does start falling, its road crews are prepared. A new salt dome and the addition of two more tandem dump trucks have county officials confident they can keep traffic moving along the more than 400 miles of roads for which it is responsible.

Christmas Treecycling

BURLINGTON, KY–Boone County and the City of Florence are offering two programs to recycle Christmas trees. Christmas Tree Pick–Up: The County’s Public Works Department and the City’s Public Services Department will run their snow routes to pick up trees curbside from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Residents should have their tree out on the curb no later than 8:00 a.m. The trees will be taken to a collection point and ground into mulch.

New guidelines to save Boone money on road

BURLINGTON, KY–Additional guidelines mandated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will allow Boone County to save money by spending money on the South Airfield Road project.

The road, which was projected to cost $19.4 million, is now expected to come in at $16.6 million.

BURLINGTON, KY–The Boone County Barn Quilt Trail began in 2006 and is sponsored by the Florence Woman’s Club as part of their community service project. This trail has grown to over 40 painted quilt blocks mounted to barns scattered across the county. Boone County ends fiscal year with surplus

BURLINGTON, KY–Despite dire budget predictions last fall, Boone County ended the fiscal year well in the black. "To do that in this economy is truly a tribute to the administration and to the staff," Judge-executive Gary Moore said. General fund revenue fell $1.28 million short of projections, but the county slashed operating expenditures by $2.05 million, according to a year-end financial report.

Boone County’s River Sweep Enjoys Sweeping Success!

BOONE COUNTY, KY – Over 340 volunteers showed up to make a difference in Northern Kentucky and worked to remove 30,000 lbs. of garbage from the Ohio riverbanks.  This year Boone County had their most successful clean–up results ever.  Of course, this was because of the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors.  All of which made a remarkable difference that has not gone unnoticed throughout the community.

The Boone County Solid Waste Management Area was one of 34 areas to receive funding. Boone County is designated to receive $17,000 for household hazardous waste, mercury and television collection.
